Quality properties & strong elite benefits

World of Hyatt - need to know

  1. It is not as easy to earn points with World of Hyatt as it is on other programs.
  2. However, redemptions for points earned provide very good value.
  3. No "5th night free" type rewards, possibly because standard awards are such good value.
  4. Qualifying Stays at each Hyatt hotel earn the same number of points per USD spent, regardless of Hyatt brand or property category.
  5. Qualifying Stays at participating SLH hotels qualify for points-earning if booked via the Hyatt Booking Channel
  6. It is relatively easy to earn the elite status for the first two tiers - less so for the top tier.
  7. There are outstanding benefits available if you do qualify for the top tier elite status level.  Hyatt's Globalist status is perhaps the best top tier status of all the large hotel programs.
  8. What are World of Hyatt Points worth? Our valuation is approx USD 16 per thousand.

Introduction

World of Hyatt is the Hyatt loyalty program and replaced the previous program (Hyatt Gold Passport) in March 2017, when (among other changes), the ability to qualify for tier status from stays was removed.

Late in 2018, when the US hospitality industry was growing rapidly, Hyatt Hotels acquired Two Roads Hospitality - the group that oversees Alila, Destination hotels, Joie de Vivre and Thompson Hotels globally.  Subsequently, in 2022 Hyatt acquired Apple Hospitality, which included AM Resorts (a group of all-inclusive resorts), further boosting Hyatt's footprint.

A strategic move, as the Hyatt properties at the time were attractive and in good locations, there just were't enough of them. The marketing alliance with Small Luxury Hotels of the World (SLH) and now ownership of Two Roads Hospitality and Apple Hospitality has overcome this criticism and further strengthened the presence in the luxury end of the spectrum for both Hyatt and the World of Hyatt program.

Hyatt now has the sixth largest portfolio of properties among the global hospitality chains, leap-frogging Radisson to now sit behind Marriott, Hilton, IHG, Accor and Best Western.

While having many subtleties, increasingly travellers (and members of other loyalty programs), tired of poor treatment have looked more closely at World of Hyatt, now that the size of its footprint is seen as less restrictive.

So, imagine having a "road map" that cuts through the complexity and shows how to navigate both the "sweet spots" of the program as well as its pitfalls.

Step into the World of Hyatt with the help of our guide to take you through the key features of the program and then see how to best use them, with specific tips and strategies.

Let's take a closer look.

Hyatt Brands and their positioning

Hyatt Hotels & Resorts has a range of 15 brands, covering the range from upscale to luxury (the latter including Miraval, the luxury wellness brand and Alila, together with its flagship Grand Hyatt and Park Hyatt brands).  There are larger properties, but Destination Hotels are available for folk who prefer a more boutique style. Such folk may also like properties in the Unbound Collection, which according to Hyatt's descriptions of the brands. is for “soft branded” properties – independently-owned, but participating in Hyatt's marketing and systems.

Hyatt House and Hyatt Place are the Hyatt brands for family-friendly stays away from resorts.  .

There are 9 Hyatt brands for all-inclusive stays - Hyatt Zilara (Adults only) and Hyatt Ziva (family-oriented) were supplemented by 7 new brands from May 2022 (following the acquisition of AM Resorts) and grouped into Hyatt's Inclusive Collection:

Initially, only properties in the Americas will participate in World of Hyatt, although the other properties will follow - see the list of legacy AMR properties participating in the World of Hyatt program.

Geographic Spread of Hyatt Hotels & Resorts

World of Hyatt's portfolio of participating properties (including SLH)  consists of both large, urban hotels, smaller boutique properties, resorts (including two all-inclusive  brands) and luxury wellness locations.  There are currently only 3 of the latter (Miraval), all located in the US, and offering well-being, life-balance in a luxury resort location.  The tariff includes all meals and also wellness oriented activities (yoga, equine, culinary, meditation/mindfulness) for folk needing to reset or refresh.

The majority of properties are located in the Americas (about 57%) while  Europe (21% of locations) and Asia (17% of locations) are the next largest proportianaly..

Chart 1 –Properties Able to be Booked via World of Hyatt - destinations by region (August 2020).

Pie chart of World of Hyatt locations by region (August 2020

This means that Hyatt has now the third largest presence in both Asia and the Middle East/Africa, behind Marriott and Accor.  While not as large as say Marriott and Hilton overall, the earlier criticism of having too small a footprint to appeal globally is now far less of a concern.

Special features of the World of Hyatt program

World of Hyatt members age 62 and above, (must show ID at check-in), can receive an 8% discount on stays paid with cash. Only 1 room per senior citizen qualifies for the discount, but up to 2 rooms under one name can be made at the time of booking (at check-in one valid ID is required per room).  Not available at all brands (eg Hyatt Place). Base Points are earned on the (reduced) amount paid.

Milestone Bonuses are earned independently of attaining tier status and provide bonus points, certificates for stays and upgrades (including to suites).

Any Elite tier member who is also a member of American Airlines AAdvantage can earn 1 Hyatt bonus point per USD spent on AA flights (in addition to your AA miles), by linking your Hyatt

When booking a stay at a participating SLH hotel, every member of World of Hyatt can access many benefits usually found at the upper status tiers, via the SLH package..

Before going through them in detail, first a look at the basics.

<Back to top>

World of Hyatt Elite Membership Tiers & Benefits

There are four World of Hyatt rewards levels. A base level of membership and three elite tier levels.

Base Membership

Each Hyatt member receives a guaranteed discount rate of up to 10%.

All Hyatt members can qualify for Free Nights, which have Resort Fees waived at participating properties.

All award bookings are cancellable and refundable.

Stays at SLH properties

All members booking a stay at a participating SLH hotel via Hyatt will enjoy the "SLH benefits" package of:

This is a very attractive package.  You earn Hyatt points based on your Hyatt membership tier, but enjoy key perks normally associated with the (mid-tier) Hyatt Explorist tier plus complimentary breakfast for two.

World of Hyatt Elite Membership Tiers

World of Hyatt has three elite membership levels in addition to that of a base member - Discoverist status, Explorist status and Globalist status.

The tier you qualify for is based on either your number of Qualifying Nights or the number of Base Points earned.

Base Points are important as these are used to calculate your tier qualification.

Bonus Points include points earned as "tier bonuses" and also points purchased, transferred or obtained through promotions.  These do not help you qualify for tier status, but can be added to Base Points for redemptions.

World of Hyatt 2021 Reduced Elite Status Qualification

LIke many other programs, World of Hyatt has made temporary changes to its program to recognise the difficulty its members have in earning and redeeming points due to travel restrictions associated with the coronavirus crisis.  For 2021, World of Hyatt has halved the usual qualification criteria that are shown further below.

  • Discoverist – Stay 5 Tier-Qualifying Nights or earn 12,500 Base Points
  • Explorist – Stay 15 Tier-Qualifying Nights or earn 25,000 Base Points
  • Globalist – Stay 30 Tier-Qualifying Nights or earn 50,000 Base Points

The reduced criteria do not apply to earning tier status via Meetings & Events or to Milestone Rewards and Lifetime Globalist.

Preferred rooms are particular rooms that may be more desirable, but are within the same room type/category booked.  This benefit is not offered at Hyatt Place, Hyatt House, Destination Residences, or Hyatt Residence Club hotels and resorts.
*** This benefit is not offered at Hyatt Place, Hyatt House, Destination Residences, or Hyatt Residence Club hotels and resorts.

Hyatt Guest of Honor

See T&C Appendix C. V (i)

A benefit for top-tier status only. If a Hyatt Globalist member pays with points for another member's stay, they can "gift" use of their status benefits to that guest.

Note that not all properties participate in this offer.  Notably not all Alila or Joie de Vivre properties and none of the Hyatt Residence properties, so it pays to check prior to committing.

For the properties that do participate, key points are that:

This is an incredibly valuable benefit of Globalist status and earned after (only) 60 nights !

Other programs are not as generous.  The most similar benefit is found on the Hilton Honors program where Gold (mid-tier) status can be gifted for 365 days after attaining a milestone of 40 nights. Hilton's Diamond status (more comparable status to Hyatt's Globalist) is able to be gifted after attaining 100 nights.

Accor's ALL program is the next closest, where a Diamond tier member can grant another person Gold status (which includes upgrades of 1 room category st availability) for as long as they retain their Diamond status.  The requirement to attain ALL Diamond status is €10,400 in eligible expenses - roughly equivalant to 112 nights.

Marriott Bonvoy is the other program offering a similar benefit.  It provides the ability to gift Silver (low) status after attaining 50 nights and Gold status (mid-tier with potential for enhanced room allocation, but no suites) after 75 nights.

How many World of Hyatt tier credits are earned from a stay?

While Base Points are earned on up to 3 rooms per stay, your Tier-Qualifying Nights are based on only 1 room per stay and tier benefits only apply to the member + 1 person staying with them.

The monetary portion of a Points + Cash stay earns Base Points (but not the points portion).

Moving to a Higher Elite Tier

Qualifying Nights or Base Points (but not stays) within a calendar year are used to determine membership of the elite status tier for a member.

Members may earn a higher Elite status as soon as they meet the criteria to qualify.

Retaining Your Elite Tier

Once qualified, the member retains that tier status through the February of the second calendar year after qualifying.  If you re-qualify for that tier (or qualify for a higher tier) during that period, the term of your tier status is extended to reflect that.

If you fail to re-qualify for your current tier, your status falls to the level consistent with the amount of night/points you did earn.
points N places logo for travel tips Tip : This second year of benefits is generous compared to other programs.

World of Hyatt (covid-19) Tier Status Extension

Status and benefits will be extended for all existing elite members without having to re-qualify. This means that whatever your status was as of March 31, 2020 – whether Discoverist, Explorist or Globalist – it was automatically updated to reflect a 28 February 2022 expiration date.

For the 2021 calendar year, World of Hyatt is reducing its elite status qualifications by 50 percent so members can achieve or requalify for status and enjoy elite benefits in half the time – either by staying half the number of nights or earning half the number of Base Points required in a calendar year. For example, a member can earn top-tier Globalist status in record time by staying 30 Tier-Qualifying Nights or earning 50,000 Base Points in 2021 and start enjoying exclusive benefits including 30% Bonus points, waived resort fees, Club access or breakfast and free night awards, room upgrades including standard suites available at check-in and more.

Reduced 2021 World of Hyatt elite status qualifications include:

  • Discoverist – Stay five Tier-Qualifying Nights or earn 12,500 Base Points
  • Explorist – Stay 15 Tier-Qualifying Nights or earn 25,000 Base Points
  • Globalist – Stay 30 Tier-Qualifying Nights or earn 50,000 Base Points

The reduced criteria do not apply to earning tier status via Meetings & Events or to Milestone Rewards and Lifetime Globalist.

Status-matching

World of Hyatt has only one status-matching partner - MGM Resorts.

M Life in turn only tier match with the following partnerships: Royal Caribbean, Celebrity Cruises, and World of Hyatt.

Caesar's members can also tier match to MGM, but in person only at two of MGM's properties - the Borgata in Atlantic City NJ, and MGM Springfield in Springfield MA.

So if you already enjoy cruises or stays at MGM properties or (perhaps Caeser's Hotels & Resorts), you could find a pathway to an elite tier with World of Hyatt by (for example)

  1. obtaining a match to M Life either in person at the Borgata in Atlantic City    or      from Royal Caribbean's Crown & Anchor Society;
  2. then requesting a match from M Life to World of Hyatt (automated).

To see which tier you can expect to be matched to, see the table at the bottom of our Best Hotels Rewards program guide.

Earning rewards points (Hyatt Points)

How many World of Hyatt points are earned from a stay?

Each stay (defined as a series of consecutive nights whare a member occupies a room at a participating property, that includes at least one tier-qualifying night).  Payments for each stay for nights booked at an "eligible rate".  This essentially means that non-discounted rates, and bookings made via Online Travel Agencies are excluded.  You also do not earn base points for either:

Note that Hyatt Privé rates and Hyatt's Senior Citizen rates both do qualify for points-earning, as do bookings made through a Travel Agent (but not an OTA like Expedia etc)  See T&C Appendix A.I,(a)(5).

You earn 5 World of Hyatt Base Points per USD (or equivalent) spent, for up to 3 rooms per stay (the member must stay in one of them).  Refer T&C Appendix A.I,(a)(8)

SLH bookings only earn points for the room, not other spending.

For other participating properties, qualifying charges (basically those that appear on your folio for which you personally pay) also qualify to earn points. A member can also earn 5 Base Points per USD spent on "eligible non-stay charges" that vary by location but typically include charges for spa or salon services and food and beverage expenditure at property-operated outlets.

Accrual of Milestone Bonus Points

See T&C Appendix B. IV..

Independently of earning tier status, members will earn Milestone Bonuses for every 10 nights stayed (or base points earned up to 100,000) within a calendar year, starting from 20 nights/35,000 points.

Credit Cards

Some credit cards offer sign-on points and the ability to earn Hyatt points from spending (either directly, or upon transfer to Hyatt points). Credit cards vary by jurisdiction (eg none are available in Australia), so you should check locally to see if there are any available that suit your needs and circumstances.

Retaining Hyatt Points

World of Hyatt points expiration

Points expire after 24 months of no “activity” and cannot be reinstated - T&C III (a).

This is quite tough. Not monitoring your balance could cost you dearly. Fortunately it is quite easy to prevent points expiry if you plan ahead.

Activity means on the account, defined as either:

Note that transferring or pooling points does qualify as activity.  This isn't the case with some other programs (eg Hilton Honors).

World of Hyatt Points and Awards Extension

World of Hyatt like many other programs, has extended the life of its points, so that members are not disadvantaged by the difficulty in redeeming points due to travel restrictions during the coronavirus crisis.

  • For all members, points will not be forfeited due to lack of activity until 30 June, 2021.
  • Awards with 2020 Expiration: All unused Free Night, Suite Upgrade and Club Lounge Access awards with expiration dates between March 1, 2020 and December 31, 2020 will be extended to December 31, 2021.
  • Awards with 2021 Expiration: All unused Suite Upgrade and Club Lounge Access awards with February 28, 2021 expiration dates will be extended to December 31, 2021. In addition, all unused Free Night awards that were earned in 2020 with 2021 expiration dates will be extended to December 31, 2021.

Strategy prior to expiry

Prior to your points expiring, you can quickly reset the activity date and retain your Hyatt points by spending USD 24 to buy Hyatt bonus points (for a minimum 1,000 but you could buy more, subject to your annual limit of 55,000 per calendar year).

This provides an almost immediate reset.

points N places logo for travel tips Tip : To track my points balances and expiry dates, I use Award Wallet. It is very handy if you have many rewards programs as it offers an extensive list of airlines, hotels and other rewards programs. It allows you to keep track of points balances of your various programs and receive expiry reminders for up to 3 of them. If you are a member of more programs, for a modest fee of USD 30 pa, you can remove this restriction. Using the notifications feature should help you avoid having to pay to reinstate points.

Points.com offers a similar service, without the notifications (you need to login regularly), but is free.  Note: points.com is one of our advertisers.

Using Your Hyatt Points

Hyatt Points have flexible uses and can be used for: ·

  1. Free Night awards in standard or premium rooms and suites
  2. Room Upgrade awards, where you upgrade a cash booking to a higher room level
  3. Redemption Experiences (similar to, but not yet of the high standard of Marriott Bonvoy)
  4. Travel partners such as airline / rail miles or car rentals
  5. Transferring points amongst family and friends.

Use Hyatt Points to upgrade a paid stay

After making a cash booking for a Hyatt room (on their site or via a Travel Agent (but not an OTA like Expedia etc) , so you receive your member discount and earn points), you can use some of your existing points to upgrade to make your stay a little more enjoyable.

Room Upgrade Award Hyatt Points required
Regency Club / Grand Club 3,000
Suite Upgrade 6,000
Premium Suite Upgrade 9,000

I think Hyatt Club lounge access is very desirable.  They provide an oasis in which to relax, especially if you have been walking around during the day.  Complimentary refreshments and snacks are on offer all day, and the breakfast and happy hour service is typically more than generous.

For approx USD 48 per night (based on our valuation of USD 16 per thousand points), I think an upgrade to Regency Club, but especially the Grand Club, where available, represents great value.

To upgrade, call (800) 544-9288 in the U.S. and Canada, or your nearest Hyatt Global Contact Center.

Hyatt Free Night Awards

All rewards stays are available, with no blackout dates.

When redeeming Hyatt Points for a reward stay (any stay using points or Points + Cash) in a standard room, you can book your free night online  (check the box for "use points").  For suites, you can call (800) 544-9288 in the U.S. and Canada or if outside the U.S. and Canada, you should call your nearest Hyatt Global Contact Center.

Have your membership details handy when you do.

Note that if a member makes an award reservation, checks in, and departs earlier than the confirmed checkout date, the member forfeits any unused portion of the award and corresponding points. ( T&C Appendix B.II.(a)6 )

Hyatt Award Chart

The table below shows the category of property and the maximum points required for a night’s stay. The current pricing is the "Standard" column, as the introduction of peak/off-peak pricing has been deferred until July 2021. Our Hyatt peak pricing summary has more details.

World of Hyatt also (with a few exceptions) suspended its annual hotel category award chart changes that typically occur each March. This means that most hotels will remain in their current categories and be redeemable for the same number of points in 2021 as they were in 2020.

To see which properties are in a particular category, click on the category number.  Participating SLH properties (minimum 12,000 points) are included.

Table - World of Hyatt points required per night for a Standard Room.

Hyatt Category

Standard Peak Off-Peak
1 5,000 6,500 3,500
2 8,000 9,500 6,500
3 12,000 15,000 9,000
4 15,000 18,000 12,000
5 20,000 23,000 17,000
6 25,000 29,000 21,000
7 30,000 35,000 25,000
8 40,000 45,000 35,000

Redemption rates for Hyatt hotels offer very good value compared to other programs. Especially for stays in Asia.

A stay at a Category 1 (available from only 5,000 points - max spend of USD 1,000) is enough for a free night at:

  1. Alila Solo and Studios at Alila Seminyak in Indonesia
  2. Alila Bangsar Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia.

Using your Hyatt Points for the booking

Members may book a reward stay for standard or premium room types using nearly any combination of points and money, in increments of 1,000 Points and starting at 5,000 Points.

To pay for your booking you can use points in your account:

If you still don't have quite enough points for the stay you desire, you can either:

Transferring Hyatt Points

A key difference from many other programs is the ability to combine Hyatt points with another member. Unfortunately, this does not extend to pooling points in the way members of other programs can.

Two members combining Hyatt points to redeem an award must use the Hyatt Point Combining Request Form and each member may only transfer or receive points once every 30 days.

There are a couple of hoops to jump through though:

  1. The form must be completed and signed by both members and either physically mailed ("snail mail"), or emailed.  Ensure that you compress the form when you scan it, so that Hyatt's server will accept it (files of more than 1 Mb in size are rejected);
  2. Allow up to 3 days for the form to be processed - this can be frustrating at times when awards night availability is tight and disappears quickly.

points N places logo for travel tips Tip If you transfer points to a Hyatt Globalist to have them book on your behalf, you can enjoy their fabulous tier benefits through the Guest of Honor feature.

Purchase Hyatt Points

 (T&C Appendix A.V.)

All members can buy World of Hyatt points through their points-buying service.  Points.com is one of our advertisers and at no additional cost to you, we may receive small compensation should you use this link to make a purchase. You don't have to use our link, but we are thankful when you do - every little bit helps us to keep this site going.

The usual price is USD 24 per thousand - less during their regular promotions.

Note that:

Hyatt Points Promotions

World of Hyatt has regular promotions.  I don't recommend buying them speculatively, or hoarding them, as points are regularly devalued by most programs..

But if you have a particular stay in mind, taking advantage of promotions can really slash the cost of your stay, especially if you combine purchasing points with the Points + Cash feature of the program.

Points + Cash

Starting at 5,000 Hyatt Points, you can choose a combination of points and cash to pay for your hotel booking.

The points requirement is 50% of what you need for a fully points-based redemption.  The cash portion is 50% to 70% off the standard cash rate for the room.

So half the number of points and no more than half the cash - maybe only 30 % of the cash.  Bargain!

The monetary portion of Points + Cash earns Base Points, which count towards both tier credits and rewards points making Points + Cash a particularly valuable benefit.

Table - Hyatt Points + Cash required per night for standard rates (not peak/off-peak).

points N places logo for travel tips Tip :    Base Points are earned on paid stays and the money portion of a Points + Cash stay. Tier credits are earned on paid stays, awards stays and Points & Money stays. If a little short of points required for a desired stay, use the Points + Cash feature, rather than buying more points, as

  1. Bought points do not contribute to tier status qualification, while the cash portion of Points + Cash does.
  2. The money-portion earns Hyatt points.
  3. The required points are halved, but the cash portion is reduced by at least half (and as much as 70% for a room booked at the standard rate).

points N places logo for travel tips Tip :    Always compare the cash and points prices.to see which will provide you with best value.  Points + Cash will usually provide the best value for your stay.

For example, I looked on behalf of friends at the three Hyatt properties in Melbourne for an overnight stay late in December 2020.  All prices are in USD.

Hyatt Property

Category Member Rate Seniors Rate
Points Points + Cash
Park Hyatt Melbourne 5 224 206 20,000 10,000 + $114
Grand Hyatt Melbourne 4 206 190 15,000 7,500 + $106
Hyatt Place, Essendon Fields 2 161 - 8,000 -

The Grand Hyatt is 25% cheaper than the Park Hyatt on a points basis, but only 8% cheaper on a cash basis.  The Grand Hyatt represents better value as you are receiving USD 13.73 per thousand points compared to only USD 11.20 per thousand points for the Park Hyatt property.

Similarly, if using the Points + Cash feature, the Park Hyatt provides value of USD 11.40 per thousand points, while the Grand Hyatt provides value of USD 14.13 per thousand points.  Our friends will be staying at the centrally located and very nice Grand Hyatt, using Points + Cash.

The Hyatt Place doesn't suit their needs (close to the airport, but not to the city centre).  It does offer very good value though for a points redemption at USD 20.13 per thousand points - even better than our valuation of USD 16 per thousand.  Even if you don't have any points now, during a points promotion with a 25% discount, you could purchase 8,000 points at USD 18 per thousand, and redeem them for an awards stay at the Hyatt Place at a 10% discount to paying the cash price directly.

Are there World of Hyatt member-only offers?

There are changing World of Hyatt offers that offer good value, together with some special ongoing discounts for:

In addition, there are periodic offers that provide extra points for stays.  These can be very generous, such as the Bonus Journeys global promotions that in the past have provided between 2X and 3X points everywhere, for all World of Hyatt members. . Elite members were able to earn an additional 2,500 bonus points on their first stay.

Some promotions are regionally based, such as the 10% off for stays at participating Hyatt hotels in Asia Pacific or as much as 15% off for stays in Latin america and the Caribbean.

For Hyatt members using award stays, rather than paying cash, there have also been Free nights on sale promotions where you receive 15% to 25% of your points back for stays (sometimes with free parking too).

So there is often something for everyone.  Generally for at least 10% off the already reduced members' rates.
